And the Layoffs Go On (and On)

wcoverlayoffs.jpegThe weather has us in enough of a crap mood already without having to read news of more layoffs in our world all morning.

Condé Nast’s never-ending month of news we’d rather not hear seems to be drawing from to a close, but it’s not totally over yet. Just yesterday FWD reported that longtime W features director James Reginato had left the magazine with more soon to follow.

Teen Vogue lost a bunch of people on the business side (while editorial was spared) and Details had to let go both its executive editor and its fashion director, Michael Macko. We’ve heard from many over at 4 Times Square that a culture of fear has taken over, and we can certainly understand why. It’s all just a major bummer, even if it is necessary to keep the business going.

It’s certainly a brave new world for the print publishing industry. New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger certainly didn’t help boost anyone’s spirits yesterday by comparing the industry to the Titanic saying to Daily Intel, “The best analogy I can think of is — have you ever heard of the Titanic Fallacy? What was the critical flaw to the Titanic? A captain trying to set a world speed record through an iceberg field? [shakes his head]. Even if the Titanic came in safely to New York Harbor, it was still doomed. Twelve years earlier, two brothers invented the airplane.” Yikes.

And in the design world, we just got word from WWD that Versace will be cutting 350 jobs worldwide. We hope this doesn’t become a trend in the luxury market, but we fear it might.

Let’s hope this all turns around soon! And sorry to be such Debbie Downers, but we all need to be aware of what’s going on. But now we shall move on to more fun topics.

Re: DETAILS' Michael Macko, it was a newly created position that he moved into last summer from his cushy job as a fashion director at Saks. According to the NY Post, they were paying the guy over 200K to "direct" the fashion of the mag. Everyone knows that the guys who work under him, styling the book and scouting the market do most of the work anyway.

And therein lies the problem with magazines. They pay a ton of unnecessary money to the ones at the top of the masthead who do the least amount of work. THOSE are the ones who need to go, not the ones near the bottom who really want to be there and work hard.

The 'Nasties probably thought Macko was bad press. Did you see the lawsuit he was involved in last month? Ouch!

Totally agree with Luke, however everybody is chopping due to all this new technology they are going to start introducing. Recently wrote about it

The whole industry is slowly starting to move through a revolution, its quite exciting but scary at the same time.
