How Much Money Are You Wearing Today?

money money.jpg

Do you tally the cost of your clothes in your heads?

The fashion boys (and a few girls) on the message boards over at superfuture started posting the total prices of what they’re currently wearing on a thread called “How Much Was Your Outfit Today?”

The responses range from:

“3rd world tailored suit (but 1st world fabric) = ~$1,200
3rd world tailored shirt (again, 1st world fabric) = ~$75
hermes belt = $550
jm weston shoes = $650
j.crew boxers = $10?
really old socks = $0
= $ 2,485 - but i don’t feel guilty because i wear this almost everyday and everything except the boxers and socks are going to last years and years”

to:

“10deep shirt - $10, uniqlo one wash $20, vans chukkas $60. $90 total ..”

This got us thinking.

We’re kind of cheating, because we haven’t left the house today, but we’ve got on dress from Swedish designer Numph bought on sale in London ($40) and gray Gap undies ($5).

That’s only $45, but maybe when we go out later we’ll add blue Marc by Marc flats ($240 at Century 21) and an Alice Roi box purse (sort of free, part of pay after working at the pop-up store) bringing us to a total of $285.

But, how much does your outfit cost today? And was it worth it?

I didn't put much thought into my outfit today, so it's all a little boring:
Ballet flats from Target: $14
BCBG Skinny Jeans: $0 as a Christmas present, though I think my mom got them on sale for around $60.
Target T-shirt: $10 (?)
Necklace from an estate sale: $5

$29, though if you count the jeans then $89.

I shop on a nonprofit salary, so I really can't afford anything over $100 unless it's going to last me years and years. I wish I could justify a miu miu bag, or even those Marc by Marc Jacobs flats. I could maybe justify a good coat.

I like this site and I deeply love and respect the art of real fashion designers, but justifying $300 shoes and dresses when most of them are quite poorly made is insane to me. I would rather spend the money on other things.

Truly, the only new stuff that really interests me to wear is either:
1. super expensive designer gear, but I feel like even if I DID save up and buy something, in NYC it would immediately scream " last season" so its kind of a pointless rat race to even try to keep up on that level - so I dont bother
2. or hilarious campy rainbow shop trash.

Spending real money on the bannna republic/ gap/ H&M things in the middle leaves me cold as ice. And Forever 21, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologie are owned by right wing assholes,( plus F21 doesnt pay thier workers anything) so I dont support them
This leaves me with : the thrift shop , local desgner sales, Beacons Closet, and Filenes basement. Oooh I can see you ladies cringing over the internets! BUT shouldn't we be investing in ourselves rather than bags and shoes? Plus, not to sound all political- (except every decision we make IS political) , unless its beautiful desinger artistry that makes our hearts soar, as opposed to just one more trendy thing, dont you think we really dont NEED to make or buy more new stuff, we should use what we have already made in this world?
I spend 75% of my shopping budget in secondhand shops and people CONSTANTLY ask where I got my beautiful things. And I don't shoplift either...
Retail is for suckers. BTW feel better soon Kara!

me:

1) gray patent leather dolce vita heels: orig. $140, pd $60 on sale at shopbop

2) black longsleeve beau & eros tee: retail around $40, on clearance at loehmann's for $10

3) pink skinny radcliffe jeans: orig. $215, bought on sale at Barneys $59.99

4) long black hanes men's tank: scavenged from a gift bag my boyfriend got, probably costs $10

5) gold chain and tassel necklace: made it myself

6) diamond studs: a gift, probably $1k

7) skinny pink studded belt: $40 in Japan

8) rayban wayfarers: "borrowed" from boyf

9) kooba : another gift, retail $625

retail: $2185
i actually paid: $170

amazing even to me. granted, i got lucky today borrowing stuff and wearing my two of the most expensive clothing/accessory gifts i own.

this is fun....I normally wear something I've found at a great bargain. But today was not one of those days:

lt grn rayon Liz Claiborne blouse -- $29
dk grn plaid Talbot's skirt -- $148
dk brn Ralph Lauren belt -- $149
dk brn Frye's boots -- $298
Seiko watch -- $249 (gift)
diamond stud earrings -- $10,000 (appraisal price, given as gift)
diamond ring set -- $24,000 (again, appraisal price, given as gift)
Coach bag -- $398 (gift)
Total -- $35,271
I've had the jewelry for years, so broken down, they're not so bad $$wise. Also, they were wedding presents....
The Coach bag, Talbot's skirt, and Frye boots: they'll last for many seasons to come
