Adventures in Copyrights: Irina, Irina

Several years ago, there was buzz that Vera Wang wanted to get in with the kids. She’d witnessed Marc by Marc Jacobs and felt, somehow, that she belonged there too. Maybe it was because of her two daughters, still in high school. Or maybe it was for something more practical: Girls spend money, and she was missing out.

So Vera birthed Princess, a fragrance that starred a jeweled purple bottle plus Camilla Belle as its face.

Then Vera hit Kohl’s, and although her line went onsale three days after its launch date, it was still cute - especially the brocade coat and a few of the dresses, which had price tags easily in line with younger shoppers.

But now, maybe, Vera’s gone a bit too far.

She’s put this dress up on ShopBop, and it’s very familiar.

With a cinched, sashed waist, a one-shoulder swoosh, and a short hem with loose pleats, it looks a lot like the Kate Moss for TopShop dress we faltered across this Spring. This version is almost $500, instead of $75.

The model also looks like a wannabe Irina, which makes it even funnier.

As I'm sure you already know, they basically pull from a pool of a half dozen models at Shopbop....all of them alarmingly thin, even for models, and some of them oddly unpleasant to look at (I, for one, have issue with their redhead's model's face). So I don't know about the wannabe Irina thing.

But, yeah. The dress is more or less a facsimile.

i see your point...but one could counter that it's a very common, classic style...how many drapey one-shouldered dresses and gowns have you seen over the years?...and the shorter length is a logical adjustment to make it wearable and appealing to a younger market...

However similar, Wang's is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better.

while i can see the similarities in the dress, i don't think that having brown hair qualifies for being a "wannabe irina". maybe if she had bangs it'd be another story.

Silly fashionista! Can't you see she's not ripping off Kate Moss but rather she's ripping off her own dress, the one worn by Keira Knightley at the Oscars?

Yeah, I don't really see her as an Irina lookalike.

But I know what you mean Rebe, I am completely annoyed by the redhead shopbop model! Her expressions are downright awful....someone should post some of her worst shots because there are definitely some funny ones. And they keep using her! I don't get it.

Actually, Keira Knightley wore a floor-length, eggplant-coloured version of this Vera gown to the 2006 Academy Awards that quickly propelled her to the top of several best-dressed lists. Way before Kate Moss' one-shouldered dress hit stores this year. The Vera design on Shopbop bears a closer resemblance to Keira Knightley's gown (only difference is its length) rather than the Kate Moss dress.

uggggh i really hate the shopbop models, they're way too thin and i always feel like they don't really want you to know what a piece looks like bc most of the time they stand in weird, contorted poses. they all have the most bizarre attitude.

EVERYTHING at kohl's goes on sale three days after it hits the store.

Honsetly, I think the Kate Moss one is much better. Not so stiff and flirtier. Although I have to agree that the Vera Wang dress is a shorter version of Keira's dress.

But who did Kate Moss copy before Vera Wang had the chance to copy Kate Moss? In the end, this game is a little chicken and egg.

that redheaded shopbop model has the deadest eyes i've ever seen. and i agree that she has some of the worst photos on that site -- so bad that i think they put those up on purpose. i can't imagine how bad the ones they didn't put up were.

do brownheaded white girls all look alike to fashionista now? because i see no resemblance except the length of hair. irina is way cuter and more charming!

I sooo concur about that redhead. She looks as though she's forced to drink curdled milk right before a shoot. (or she shoots something herself...) Too skinny and doesn't ever make me want to buy a dress when she's modeling it.

Why doesn't shopbop hire better looking girls? I say get some locals off the street. Can't be any worse.

Ugh, I once worked with that redheaded model at my old job. Totally unprofessional — showed up late, insisted on leaving early, phoned in the shoot, acted as though she was doing us a favor by halfheartedly posing. We didn't get any good shots of her because she always does that dead-eyed look. We never booked her again.

I actually really like the redhead model. Her and the brunette pictured in this post used to totally sell those clothes for me before I moved on to Revolve because of Shopbop's pushing of fur.
