Fashion Is Fun

What’s Your Favorite Fashion Movie?

djs are not rock stars.jpg The Denver Westwood (think Village Voice, but Colorado) makes an interesting point today in their style pages:

The best movies for fashion aren’t usually “fashion movies.”

The Devil Wears Prada had a killer pair of Chanel boots, and a lot of forgettable, over-the-top ensembles - the kind pronounced with a faux French accent. Clueless and Legally Blonde are gleeful style spoofs, and movies about models usually involve some red lipstick, a wifebeater, and a lot of drugs (Gia comes to mind immediately, but there must be more).

Meanwhile, every time we watch Almost Famous, we run to our closets and wonder, “How can we make it real?”

The new Edith Piaf movie, Ma Vie En Rose, had a similar, though slightly more subtle, effect on our outfits.

Zac Posen once told us his style is influenced by former film costumers like Bob Mackie, and Galliano often references old movies in his collections.

But what do you watch when you need a new outfit idea?

Nylon magazine talks about how different movies affected they're fashion choice. This month is heathers (so winona ryder is in 2 fashion mags this month). I think they have mentioned almost famous. Rayanne Graff from my so-called life is someone whos fashion sense inspires me. Also on this british show skins, one of the characters, cassie, has really great clothes.

I'm seconding all the Bonnie and Clyde comments. Faye Dunaway is, of course, fabulous and, as a bonus, it's always nice to look at Warren Beatty.
I actually read a piece on the Jovovich-Hawk girls in which they sighted Bonnie and Clyde as an inspiration for their collection.

I often go on 20s/30s kicks due to my frequent exposure to films from/about that time - anything written by Noel Coward, or Julie Andrews movies like Star! or Thoroughly Modern Millie.

My fave musical films from or about the 70s: Cabaret, Performance and Velvet Goldmine have fabulous clothes integral to the story. Dominique Sanda's wardrobes in Bertolucci's "The Conformist" and "1900" never fail to make me swoon. Roz Russell in "Auntie Mame" and Shirley MacLaine in "What a Way to Go!" have some of the best costume changes to suit the era/scenes in their films. We may not be able to or want to emulate the clothes themselves but watching these films will give a great lesson in the attitude to carry anything off. Viva cigarette holders! Same for Helen Mirren, nude or wearing Gaultier, in The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover.
