The Devil Wears Jazz Hands

the_devil_wears_prada03.jpg We heard something fun from our theater friends last night:

That The Devil Wears Prada is in preliminary development to become a stage musical.

With Legally Blonde and Hairspray still playing Broadway after premiering at the cinema, the idea doesn't sound that far fetched -

Except the kind of arias we'd expect from Miranda Priestly would be bitter, brittle, and probably best written by Stephen Sondheim in the vein of Ladies Who Lunch.

And we think Patti Lupone should play her, Evita style.

Would you go see a fashion musical -

Or would it be too maddening to be in yet another room with hot artsy guys who would rather do their makeup than do you?

Hells YES I'd go to see a fashion musical. That's probably the only kind of musical that would keep my attention... that and Disney musicals. Gotta love Disney.

Katharine Hepburn starred on Broadway in Coco, a musical based on, well, you know who. I think she was nominated for a Tony for it. Don't think it was a hit, though I would loved to have been able to see it!

With the right writers and actors, absolutely. And wouldn't it be divine if Meryl Streep played Miranda on Broadway? She has a lovely singing voice.

to No. 5: you're right - Coco was more of a flop than a hit.
The only other fashion musical that comes to mind is Pins and Needles by the Ladies' Garment Union in the 1930s...
I'm a theatre geek.

I love the Sondheim/"Ladies Who Lunch" comment - it's spot on.

On the screen to stage note, The Producers also made that journey... obviously, successfully

It'll be interesting to see if this one makes it.
