Discuss: Stella Hearts Vegans; Adidas Doesn’t

and heaven and nature sing.jpg
The Independent reports today that Stella McCartney’s taking heat from animal rights activists.

The longtime vegetarian is getting flack for her secondary line, Stella for Adidas. While her sportswear is all made without animal products, Adidas itself uses kangaroo leather in many of its shoes, causing some cries of hypocrisy.

Should Stella refuse a partnership with any huge company that goes against her own fashion ethics?

Or is the designer actually pushing her cause by setting a good example for Adidas, inspiring them to play with other vegan fashion options, and making animal-free sportswear available to a bigger group of shoppers?

It should be noted that kangaroos are neither endangered nor slaughtered inhumanely, and according to our Aussie source, they also make excellent beef jerky - though we realize this is beside the point.

I think as long as stella continues with her beliefs that she can colaborate with who ever she wants. no matter what I am sure they will always be a way to link her with a company that doesnt share the same belifs as her..for example if she colaborates with a store that doesnt use animal products....it might be owned by a store that does.so go stella!!!

Kangaroo leather is excellent for wear and tear, by the by. Many soccer and rugby boots are found in this leather, because it's stronger than traditional cowhide and doesn't lose its shape. Besides, Kangaroos are like rats in Australia.

I think if she had truly wanted her Adidas stuff to be animal-free, she would have stipulated that before any contracts were signed. So, yes, if this is causing her any real grief, she should make sure of the materials before agreeing to anything.

I am pretty sure it's not going to make a difference to her. She seems to be all about making options available and not standing on principle when she could be offering alternatives. For that, I love her, and it keeps me in shoes and bags. It's hard out there for a fashion loving vegan.

Also: all her Adidas products *are* vegan, and kangaroos aren't like rats in Australia. They may not be endangered, but they're not pests either!

Nope. Not a pest at all. I mean, it's not like the Australian government is planning culls or researching possible contraceptives to control them or anything ...

(And fine, I admit I misread the post on Stella. Whatevs. I don't function before 5 p.m. and at least one pot of coffee.)

I think the fact that the general public in Australia don't protest the use of kangaroo skins is testament to the fact that we're ok with it being used.
Kangaroos are after all in plague proportions in Australia.
As long as Stella stays true to the principles she's set out then I don't think it's hypocritical at all.

Press Statement from Stella McCartney

London, Monday August 27th 2007: We would like to make a comment in reference to some recent misleading news published in the last days entertaining the idea that Stella McCartney is actually using kangaroo leather for the shoes she designs under her well established sportswear collaboration with adidas, “adidas by Stella McCartney. These stories are just simply not true.

Stella McCartney is a lifelong vegetarian and committed advocate of animal rights and doesn’t use any leather or fur in any of her collections, including of course, her successful “adidas by Stella McCartney collections, which are 100% cruelty free.

All the accessories designed in collaboration with adidas are made with alternative to leather: high performance fabrics, which don’t use any animal by products including kangaroo leather.

By using such innovative materials to produce high performance shoes, Stella McCartney proves that the use of leather is not necessary to achieve the same performance results and offers the best alternative for the consumer to decide.

Thanks "press office," but I'd remind you that this story isn't about Stella's use on kangaroo - note the very clear statement, "Her sportswear is all made without animal products.

It's a question of whether Stella should pair with a company when she knows they're going against her ethical practices.

We all wrestle with that issue in the fashion industry, and that's why we're talking about it.

Can't Stella's PR person read the blog before commenting? It clearly says "While her sportswear is all made without animal products". But then they go on saying that she doesn't use it anyway. Hey, we knew that!

Huh? Isn't Stella Mccartney owned (part owned?) by Gucci group? Who use leather, fur etc all the time? I think she's doing her bit. You've got to draw the line somewhere, what, she's not going to ride in a car cos it has a leather interior?

Hells Bells! Think I should send along my resume and NRA membership card to the PR person? Maybe some photos of me with my Alligator hunting permit?

And, really ... Was this post so scandalous as to merit a post by the PR department?
