My Humps Will Now Be Sponsored

fergieee.jpg
Fergie may love Seven Jeans and True Religion, but soon she’ll name drop the Candie’s brand into her songs - for almost $4 million.

The Times UK reports the singer has accepted an offer from the teenybopper company to integrate their products into her songs.

The move is a first in commercial music, although hip hop artists have been name dropping their favorite brands into songs for years - and though it was never overtly sponsored, it did help the singers get discounts at their favorite stores (I remember during Fashion Week two seasons ago, Missy Elliott actually told me so).

If the plan is successful, you can expect other artists to follow suit - especially since music sales keep declining. But will we still love Gwen Stefani if she’s singing about Le Sportsac?

And will there be anything left in popular culture that isn’t, essentially, a commercial?

A few years ago, a consulting firm decided to track the brands that were being mentioned in Top 40 radio over two years, and the results were pretty interesting: http://www.businessweek.com/innovate/content/aug2005/id20050823_083548.htm?chan=db

i just skimmed that business week article - very interesting.

while fergie will undoubtedly [financially] benefit from this agreement, the sacrifice as an artist as undeniable. aside from the obvious infringement on her creative integrity and freedom as an artist, she'll now have to give candies final approval of her music. so if it isn't enough to have to deal with a big record label like sony bmg, now she has to report to some teenybopper corporation.

And they wonder why record sales are down? People just don't want to purchase bad music. When you sacrifice your integrity, you sacrifice the music.

Geez, after having to endure plugs for Ponds all through The Starter Wife (yeah, like she used Ponds, give me a break!) now it's songs for sale. Have all those other artists gotten payoffs, or is Fergie just the only one to be honest about it?

wow, that's horrific. candies are gross (hello jenny mccarthy on the toilet ads) and so is fergie, but until now you had to give the woman her due because her music was cool.

gwen totally name drops lamb in her songs all the time (heck she let eve pimp fetish on "rich girl"). it's cloying but almost forgivable since it's her brand and it's awesome.

"infringement on her creative integrity and freedom as an artist"

hahahaha, this is Fergie we're talking about, no Patti Smith. She has no integrity, she sings songs about her ass!

but yeah, just another reason for me to not listen to her.

i didn't, and would never, compare fergie to patti smith (especially after seeing her live at the rock and roll hall of fame induction ceremony covering 'gimme shelter') but if you've ever met fergie or listened to her in interviews, she takes herself seriously as an artist - despite her songs about T&A.

fergie may take herself seriously as a businesswoman, but as an artist? cmon. i have no doubt she's concerned with her financial longevity and branding power, but to say she's concerned with her artistic integrity is a stretch. it's one thing for a singer to appear in candies ads, but to sign a multimillion-dollar deal to casually drop the brand name into her songs certifies her lack of artistry.

but whatevs. i wouldn't wear candies if tom ford personally gave me a pair, so i can still enjoy 'fergalicious.'
