CFD-YAY!

venas.jpg
The CFDA just announced their ten finalists for the CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund.

Winners get $200,000, mentoring by a major fashion figure, a giant spread in Vogue, and probably their own Target line.

The new kids are:

Band of Outsiders, a preppy mischief menswear brand that presents their clothes on a blog (swoon).

Erin Fetherston, the Paris-trained BFF of Kirsten and Zooey with Leith Clark and a lot of heart necklaces on her side.

Koi, the under-the-radar Thai label run by Nunthirat Suwannagate

Michael Bastian, the former men’s fashion director of Bergdorf Goodman.

Philip Crangi, a jewelry designer with a thing for hammered gold

3.1 Phillip Lim, whose sweetly slouchy dresses you probably already own

Rogan, the BFF of Bono whose jeans get worn in by rock stars before you buy them.

Three AsFour, enfant terribles with pretty architectural dresses

Vena Cava, Brooklyn girls with Paris style

VPL by Victoria Bartlett, whose company initials stand for “Visible Panty Line.”

Our hearts go out to Sophie and Lisa from Vena Cava (whose design is pictured, left), but we think Phillip Lim has this one in the bag, with ThreeAsFour getting a second place award, since they have so much support from Vogue’s Sally Singer…

The winners are announced on November 15, and you can expect to see the Vogue team at all their shows in September.

And also, here’s some fashion trivia: The Casting Director books 3 out of the 10 shows on this list.

Erin Fetherston? Man look how far being "cute" and having friends in high places can take you.

Im psyched about Vena Cava and VPL. VPL's stuff is really cute and their underwear is adorable. Though I'm sure Phillip Lim's going to win. And it's so weird that Three As Four is getting nomination now, better late than never i guess!

I think threeasfour should win the award. They are by far the most avant guarde. Who wins this award, the most commercial of the bunch?

Hmmmm....I thought the CFDA award was created to benefit up-and-coming designers from having to shutter their doors from lack of funding. Phillip Lim is already a line with wide distribution. Plus he had the Unliquo (sp?) thing. Does he really need the money? Though I do think he is the most talented........

Hey,

The CFDA Vogue award isn't a talent search for new designers.

It's a reward for both talent and business sense, and an acknowledgment that even with both those things, it's very difficult to make any money your first few years in business. Proenza just started to break even this year.

Running a fashion business requires crazy resources and regardless of your success as a young designer, you still need fiscal help to propel yourself.

We'll have more info on how this award works later, but for now you should visit Vogue.com for a brief rundown of the award.

erin featherston?? i'm in line with laia-think ef's line is way mediocre.
the others on the list however deserve every inch of credit. im with you on wanting vena but its lim's moment i'm afraid. and three as four- i'm happy they are finally getting this much deserved nomination. !! woohoo!

oh--and what is Koi? i had trouble finding anything about that label online- never heard of the label- does anyone know anything?

Vena Cava for the win.

Band of Outsiders has some nice guys' clothes, too. Stylish but not outlandish. Meaning my boyfriend might actually wear them. Woo!

(That guy modeling them on the blog is hot, too.)
