Will This Ugly Shoe Make You Hotter?

Jun 01, 2007 @ 9:05am

fitflop.jpg
The FitFlop is a pair of sandals by a UK company that promise to tone your legs posterior while you walk.

The website claims that “The FitFlop's uniquely built multi-density midsole activates muscles midstep to help tone your thighs, your calves and your glutes. In fact, FitFlops are biomechanically engineered to absorb shock, lessen joint strain, and recreate the gait of barefoot walking - but with a powerful new built-in micro-wobbleboard workout-enhancing effect.

Ookay. It’s fast becoming minidress-no-tights weather, and the lunchtime trips to Shake Shack are taking their toll. We want to believe that FitFlops are the (lazy girl’s) answer to hot legs, but there’s a slight problem:

These shoes are hideous.

Should we shelve style for a bit and wear these things, or would the world just be a happier place if everyone stuck to their Charlotte Ronson wedges, albeit a softer one?

They'd definitely be worth a little diy decorating if they really work.

Those are like the Masai Barefoot Trainers they sell at Bliss, but even uglier!

My mom got a whole set of them, two pairs of sneakers and a pair of sandals. I've worn them around when I visit and they actually do help; you can feel the burning in your calves after just a few steps. They're just as ugly as any other commuting/errand running shoe (Crocs, anyone?) so the key is to not dress them up. Wear them with yoga pants and a tank top so that its clear to everyone that these are functional objects, not fashion.

The fine print, of course, is that they recommend walking two hours a day in order to see big changes. If I had two hours a day to devote solely to walking, I wouldn't need the shoes in the first place.

weren't Dr. Scholl's wooden sandals originally sold on this same premise? Granted I don't think they're that much cuter.

i saw an even uglier version of these last year in london. i was having lunch w/ my friend in sloane sq and all these pretty girls were walking around in big ugly platform sketcher looking sneaker things. i was pretty confused, until she explained that they're supposed to eliminate cellulite.

still, i would not go there. unless i lived in azerbaijain...in which case, i would not care if anyone was staring.

Love the idea, especially I walk to and from work, but they are way too ugly to actually wear in public. I'll stick to squats.

Actually, I venture to guess that this shoe will actually make you COOLER, because like its bufugly counterpart, the MBT, if you wear it, you won't have a chance in hell of get laid. Which means you won't break a sweat and will, therefore, keep your body temperature down.

Thank you and good night.

I actually want a pair- but I probably won't ever use them because I'll be too embarassed by how ugly they are. If I can find an all black version, that would be slightly better.

I got some from Bath & Body Works (in black, which aren't quite as heinous as the red, but still plenty heinous). They arrived today. They are horribly made, ill-fitting, and stink to high heaven of cheap plastic. Because, of course, they are.

You do not get the much-vaunted rolling action of the Masai sneakers with these. Instead the resistance comes from your foot squishing into a soft-ish foam sole. I did feel it in my thighs after walking the dog in 'em though.

Still, not worth the money.

when the MBT shoes came out, there were plenty of reviews by doctors and other experts explaining why they don't work and couldn't possibly work to eliminate cellulite. can't think of a reason why these fugflops would be any different and the 2 hours a day requirement mentioned by MH is down right ridiculous. sure, if you do cardio for 2 hours a day, your legs will get fitter. but I would guess that you'd get the same results if you were walking around for 2 hours a day in your Nikes.

Whew! I was reading along, looking at those ugly shoes.... then you spelled it out:
"... they're hideous".
I'll pass.... claims like this are always over blown, anyway.

Any kind of exercise will help you tone up as long as you do it. You can get special shoes to wear, but the key is exercise. If you don't do the exercise they will not work. Save some money, buy a good pair of workout shoes and start working out. There is lots of selections and styles now, many which are very cute.

I have a pair of the red ones and they are not as ugly as people are making them out to be! I wear mine all day at the office, they may not match everything but the price you pay to look fit!

I have a pair in black. When I work out I don't dress for style...I'm sure I look plenty bad with the sweat pouring down my body and my hair frizzed out from the humidity. These shoes help me work my muscles when I'm doing simple daily chores like walking the dog or going to the grocery store as well as walking on the tread mill. I really don't think they are hideous...They certainly look much better than the Crocs that I could never bring myself to even spend a dollar on. I got my pair of fit flops from Bath & Body Works when they had them on sale for $19.95 and I feel they were well worth the money. I can definately tell a difference and I, like so many others, am so busy that I could use all the extra excercise that I can fit in my day.

I recently received my pair that I had pre-ordered from Bliss. While they certainly aren't the most attractive shoes on the market, they are extremely comfortable (they make great commuting shoes!)! I have the black ones which aren't quite as offensive as the red. I walk 3-4 miles a day, so am interested to see if they actually do anything. My one concern is if my walking pattern might change - I'm having my Pilates instructor watch how I walk in them to make sure I'm not doing anything weird that might screw up my knees. If you are too embarassed to wear them out in public, they do make great house or garden shoes.

In my walks so far, the biggest difference I can feel is in my calves.
