The Olsens Scoop W

Reader TK reminds us that "before it's in fashion, it's in Vogue... but before it's in Vogue (or W), it's on the Olsens."

That certainly seems to be the case with this Alaia belt, which we saw on Gisele yesterday with mixed results.

Maybe Mary Kate had better luck with it at the Chanel Cruise show, where she cinched her Karl-designed black gown with the piece?

Or how about Ashley, when she was snapped last month in the belt as she fled from US Weekly in Los Angeles?

Further proof that the piece doesn't have to be part of the plastic '80s ressurection we just witnessed in W...

We wonder what would have happened if MK & A had styled Gisele...

There's a difference between styling for fashion magazine, and personal styling/stylists. W puts the belt against a bright pink neon jacket to "sell" the belt. The twins weir the belt discreetly as a personal (or professional) style choice.

The object being when you look in the mag, you're supposed to wanna buy the belt. When you see the twins wear the belt, you get an idea of how to wear in everyday life.
Getting the difference.

Actually Miss J, I think you're mistaken. The difference is that two of these pictures make the belt look like a feasible wardrobe choice, and one of these pictures... does not.

This just shows how much you should rely on your own personal taste instead of following fashion mags. religiously and copying every outfit verbatim.

Take that belt and that hot pink jacket together, wear it in a real life situation..not good.

Get inspired by the fashion layouts, get some ideas and incorporate it into your own personal outfit that works for you.

im sorry but W did not copy the olsen twins...that is just one accessory nothing mind boggling. i have that exact same belt(actually my moms) and i have never seen it on the olsens..im not even trying to put myself on a pedastal i am just exentuating the fact that everyone gives the olsens so much credit! the olsens copy clothing ideas from their friends who arent famous from CA who go to NYU like lily a and madison b and harley v. i have seen turbins, hot pants, ray ban wayfarers, chloe platforms, plaid lumberjacks and suspenders on them loooooooooooong before the olsens. you can seriously predict what the olsens will wear in a month just by looking at their friends.

i agree scarlett, but i think its just that no one is taking pictuers of harley and madison so even though mkanda might not be the trendsetters they early adopt and wear the trends well - kind of like a walking vouge magazine? they clothes are always well styled and interesting even though i doubt anyone would argue they actually start any trends themselves (well, don't start trends for anyone outside of the flyover states)

I think that quote is right on :)
I do get inspired by the eds in magazines but I'm far more inspired by MK's everyday look. She makes being fashion forward seem so effortless that it makes sense for just a coffee run rather than just for a big event.

I wasn't saying anybody should follow fashion magazines for style cues KA, that choice is ones personal option.

My point is that designers & showrooms loan/give clothes to magazines to sell items. Magazines are trying to provide aspiration & inspiration for their readers; believe it or not, that is part of their job.

How we personally feel an outfit looks is irrelevant to the editors at W. Their main concern is 'how many (advertising) pages did we sell'!

Considering it was an 80s story. An Alaia waist cinching belt on a hot pink jacket is a HOT editorial choice. That same Alaia waist cinching belt looks just as hot on MK&AO!

It's all about personal choice!

MK&A are freaking brilliant. They're like gods among mortals... haha... really though their looks and persona (and money!) allow them to wear things no one else can-- and they look effing amazing 90% of the time. I find them totally inspirational!! (And also I freaking adore them!) :)

i just doubt their style would be the way it is if they werent famous and affluent. like 4 years ago they were still crimping their hair and wearing clunky shoes and ill fitting spaghetti strap dresses. their choice in friends, along with opportunities to showcase their style (credited to their money and events they are seen at) is why there is such a great hype. i used to love their clothes, but now that i go to school in ny i appreciate seeing beautiful outfits that i cant immediatly identify who makes it... mks prada turbin, christian l platforms, balenciaga bags...the designers do the work creating the pieces. its really not that hard styling expensive top of the line pieces. alot of the pieces they wear speak for themselves
