Jellies’ Last Jam?

designer jellies.jpg
We still think fondly of our purple beaded jellies from childhood, but can plastic shoes really cut it out on the mean streets of New York?

Pros:

  • Way cheaper than shoes by the same designer that are not made out of plastic.

  • The Marc by Marc ones! The Marc Jacobs ones! The bow on the Ferragamo jellies!!

  • You can wear them in the rain and not worry about ruining them.

  • Easy to clean if they get dirty.

  • Possibly eco-friendly? Do animals die for your jellies? I don’t think so.

    Cons:

  • You are still paying at least $100 for shoes that are made from a petroleum byproduct. (The Ferragamo ones are $100 and the M by MJ pair are $105).

  • They make your feet smell really bad because they don’t breathe.

  • The sole is usually also made out of plastic, so it gets ripped up if you try to wear them while pounding the pavement in your neighborhood. May only be wearable only on sand. (I guess this could also be a pro if it means you spend more time talking long walks on the beach and whatnot.)

We can’t really make up our mind about the jelly situation. Is it worth it, or is it a total rip off?

I love Melissa shoes, but the last time I got them was in Mexico! Do you know where they sell them in the US?

Also, I bought a pair of Aldo jellies that KILLED my feet but are very cute.

The only downsize to jellies are that they make your feet smell and turn black because they sweat and then just slide in the shoe all day (ew). Those Ferragamo ones are really cute, but I'm still trying to find a classic pair like the one I wore when I was 8. I saw a GUY wearing them the other day and it was weird so I didn't have the guts to ask him where he got his sandals.

Geez Louise! Jellies were the ish back in the mid-90s. But I wouldn't pay more than $10 for them because that's how much the most expensive brand cost back when I was a tubby pre-teen.

i was THISCLOSE to buying the marc jacobs jellies this weekend. i didn't for 2 reasons:
    a) as much as i wanted to, i could not justify $100 for what are essentially disposable shoes, and
    b) i ran my finger over the back of the shoe and immediately foresaw 3 months of raw, bleed-y ankles. they'd inevitably end up costing me another $100 in band-aids.
i'm bummed to hear the aldo ones are painful too! they look smoother around the edges...

my vote: still pro, especially on the beach & especially w/ band-aid blister block stick (jellies keep coming up, with the same pro examples... )

could try Urban / random mall chains' for cheap, but flipping over the marc x marc makes me want to leave cute fishy footprints all along the sand :)

ps: i'm itchy to vote twiigs style... but maybe i'm the only one who hearts clicking dots & the instant gratification rush of the results?

I wear my black Ferragamo's to clubs and sometimes during the day. I must say that that my feet do not smell after wearing them, although they do leave dirty lines on my big toe :( Buy because of the cut, they do allow your feet to breathe.
I love them, they look fabulous and if I can justify paying 100+ bucks for plastic Pucci rainboots, I can totally justify 100 for some Ferragamo jellies.

When I was a kid in Rio I had these Brasilian jelly sandals from this brand called Melissa. I used to love them to death because they were comfy, red, and cute. Sadly I was only 5 and had no sense of style because when I look at photos now I cringe. I will say this though - I remember all my friends growing up in Rio had them and at the end of the day on the school bus it was stinky town.

I agree, jelly shoes are for kids.

Also, they may be humane (no animal products), but they are absolutely in no way eco-friendly (unless someone comes up with a pair made from corn plastic or something).

I have the jellies from aldo with the peep-toe and I haven't had a problem with them yet ... and I have them in yellow and clear so they go with anything I have in my wardrobe.

And some might think they're for kids, and I guess I'm a kid at heart, but I still think they're irresistible

I have the Marc Jacobs rubber flats on the right and they are not painful AT ALL. Nor do they make my feet sweat or slide around.

Are they worth $150? I can't say but I'm enjoying mine!

I did buy the MJ ones and I carry them in my bag to put on when it rains. I don't want to ruin my good shoes or sandals in the rain. These are lightweight and they look good. a bit pricey, but you are paying for the name and his mouse design. The reason that they are cool is that they are marc's, not because they are jellies.

Creatures of Comfort on Melrose carries Melissa. You won't have to pay sales tax... but I don't think their shipping, refund, return policies are so great.

I can live with the $50 maybe not the 100 but i did think about it. the only problem is that i am scared that i am going to wear down the soles too easily...

I bought three pairs of the Marc (not marc by marc) Mouse flat jellies.

They're the most comfortable shoes ever, and in black, white, and red they just look like patent leather.

I wear them around new york city, haven't had a problem with them getting ripped up or anything.

Don't buy your jellies at aldo or urban outfitters if you don't want your feet to get cut up. the rubber on the marc ones are really soft and mold to your feet nicely.
