Forever 21 Gets More Expensive, Less Cute

twenty one twelve.jpg
Forever 21 is launching a new line, called Twelve by Twelve, which wants to bring “much more luxury” to the store, according to WWD.

The line runs mostly $50 - $100 per piece, and hopes to lure the mothers and sisters dragged into Forever 21 by their tweened out charges.

The idea behind the line seems to be that if Abercrombie was appealing to moms as well as kids, it would double business; that secretly, older women want to be just as trendy and turned over as their fashion cracked daughters and assistants. Judging from the number of grown women on the street in Juicy track pants and Nicole Richie sunglasses, it’s true.

But the big problems here are twofold:

The entire allure of Forever 21 is the prices coupled with the fast turnaround of trendy items. Neither of these ideas exist in a line that wants to be more luxurious and more classic.

Glimpses of the Twelve by Twelve line reveal that it’s heavily influenced by last season’s trends, and it’s not so pretty… or luxurious… or classic.

One more thing to think about:

Sienna Miller’s new line is called Twenty Eight Twelve. Isn’t it interesting that Forever 21 chose something so similar?

oh no! they will still carry totally cheap disposable crap right? i love f21. this line seems a little zara to me? and i agree, seems to be styled very last year and the quality doesn't seem much improved to justify spending more, they should stick to what they do so well. boo

my favorite thing about forever 21 is those obscure little pieces you find that are actually decent quality (i.e. 100% silk with full lining) for $ 29.99. theyre hard to come by but totally worth looking for. the pics for the new line definitely look a little lame to me (i agree anon, very zara) but if theres a chance of finding more higher quality pieces, im definitely excited

It's probably not a good thing when it doesn't even fit the mannequin well.

and having an LV pochette, or the latest "it" bag for that matter, is not being a "sheep" because????.....
I'm all for being catty and whatnot, but I don't understand Faran's hate. If you don't like it (sjp's bitten line I mean...), and you already blogged about not liking it and finding it offensive, why keep bringing it up? Just drop it, and ignore it, like adults do...(oh snap!! i made a bitchy remark lol, no hard feelings?)

I think this stuff looks amazing! Why you have to hate on people who want to bring something new! With slightly higher prices for better quality I feel you won't have to search as hard to find the cuter finds you do in Forever 21.

I'm sure everyone will be talking smack about Forever 21, there is always a little animosity when it comes to the vast miraculous growth of an Empire. When all is done and said "Success hurts when your not the one holding the Golden Key", JEALOUSLY IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR HEART.

The likeness to Sienna's line is weird, but weirder, what is the obsession with numbers? Forever 21, Heritage 1981, XXI, now Twelve by Twelve, all the same company...

Everyone likes to hate on F21 but we all know we shop there ourselves including our friends. ...From acessories or a good priced top to go out for the weekend. I cant wait for this new concept to hit the mall. I'd rather spend lots of money on shoes and handbags and wear luxury outfits at a great price. Cant wait to shop at 12x12!

I interviewed to be the assistant buyer for the line. I guess they didn't like the trend report they asked me to submit. Too bad it was much more on point than they're line turned out to be.

I haven't seen a Twelve by Twelve store yet but my trendy younger sis dragged me into XXI today and yesterday. As a student of apparel design and as someone with an eye for detail, I can tell you right now that when my professors coin Forever 21 and XXI as "disposable clothing," the term can be quite literal. First of all, the clothes aren't a "collection" but a random mishmash of poor knockoffs. Secondly, my 20/15 and OCD vision zoomed in (and was horrified) by threads hanging from garments, unfinished seams, poor button attachments, even fabric discoloration on a sweater.
I wanted to pass out due to the onslaught of 14-20 year-olds and their parents snatching up garments like kids at the mall candy store. After spending what seemed like over an hour in this two-story palace of teendom, I did not see anything that a) looked quality enough to justify purchasing it and b) was not something that I already had a better-quality version of, or c) could not sew myself.
Near the end, I spotted an inoffensive and ironic (I say ironic because it was the only decent-looking piece in the midst of crud) blazer-esuqe piece, albeit mostly unlined, but it wasn't "Forever 21" or "XXI" brand, had no apparent hanging threads, and if the buttons fall off I can probably sew more on myself. Plus it was a summer clearance item which was cheaper than my Gap camis, so I sneakily justified the purchase.
P.S. Next day found Helly Hansen sailing shoes for only $30...still $109 online! (Don't hate - I'm from Oregon.)
