Adventures in Copyrights, Part Twenty One

chanel shoe copies.jpg
Is fashion an oligarchy? We still don’t think it has to be, but if there was any proof on this site that the tastes of a few dictate the choices of millions, here we go:

Last week, Romney emailed and asked us if the Abaete for Payless line looked like Versace. We didn’t quite see it, but today, reader TK sent us something more compelling:

Shots of slides from Abaete and Payless, along with Chanel’s most recent shoe collection.

Those are Chanel shoes on the left, and Nine West ($99) above, Abaete for Payless ($25) below.

What Would Coco Do?

I'm pretty sure Coco would be cool with it.

Coco would point out that the "tan" in her tan and black combo was not intended to mean the color of your filthy, NYC-street walking foot bound by a strip of sweaty plastic.

I'm so tired of hearing designers bellyache about knockoffs!

Let's face it, the real beef between CFDA designers and brands like Forever21 and Urban Outfitters is that designers don't want the "unwashed masses" to have access to their so-called groundbreaking creations.

Fashion has always been about the have's and have-not's, but up until the advent of the knockoff, designer clothes were kept in the hands of the few and out of those of the many just by virtue of the high price tags.

And really -- what's so special about a Diane von Furstenberg when you can get basically the same dress from H&M at a fraction of the price (Minus the marketing and the label name of course!)?

Nothing!

This is just another case of good old fashioned 19th century aristocratic elitism disguised as a 21st century copyright dispute.

How interesting that part 21 isn't about forever 21.

honestly? she'd be rolling in her grave with displeasure. she stood for style, not for hooker shoes.

ummm. Karl Lagerfeld is all about sex, what are you talking about? He sent beaded underwear down the runway.

They all look silly.

I really don't see how this is "copyright infringement." They are similar, yes. But the knockoffs are simply following the styles and trends from the runways, as lower-end retailers always have. They are not identical, and you can't say that these shoes are revolutionary or the idea of plastic platforms is proprietary in any way. My mom has some shoes very similar to these from the 70s (in yellow and plastic no less!) and I, sadly, had something similar in the mid 90s. So, who did Lagerfeld infringe on? Or because he is high end, get "inspiration" from?

This feature has got to stop. It's getting boring.

I love this feature, and I think people are reading way too much into it. Maybe a name change wouldn't hurt to recontextualize it. I don't look down at f21 and etc for knocking things off. Although I wish mass retailers were bringing a bit more originality and uniqeness to things (or atleast ripped off better things).

The canal street fakes though are another tacky and amoral story though...

both selections are not in my taste,
...but abate, the brand, obviously and shamelessly copied chanel- i mean the cork wedges noted in a comment above are an even clearer example of this...very wrong indeed as the quilted look is a chanel's thang...not a payless one.

The knock-offs look better than the originals. But I too wish that the knock-offs done by F21 and their ilk knocked-off things a bit more uniquely and edgier.

the cheaper ones look better, mainly because perspex + skin + summer = uuuugllleeee.

i like the abaete ones better too. and for the love of god, if you are into this look, you're retarded for paying more than $25 anyway. if you want to spend money on something chanel, try to buy something you might actually want to wear a month from now too.

There were some similar one's at Baker's, but I don't remember by who.

They were sick though, you could see the screws in the clear part of the plastic. yuck.
