Coco, The Movie

Two films about Coco Chanel are racing towards completion.

The first is a French movie directed by William Friedkin, who also made The Exorcist. It stars Marina Hands, who may not be famous here, but she's basically the Paris version of Nicole Kidman. Called Coco Et Igor, the movie's focus is on Chanel's affair with the composer Igor Stravinsky.

Meanwhile, director Daniele Thompson is working on a Coco Chanel biopic for 2008. While no cast has been announced, we think Angelina Jolie should have the role.

Why?

Well, Chanel was a bit ruthless, and her style had a raw edge that came from her childhood on the streets. Remember, Coco was the first designer to make the standard black dress - something previously paired with the working class - into a high fashion staple, and she also subverted the suntan from something that plagued sailors and farmers to something for women of leisure.

Angelina seems to walk the line between urchin and empress pretty steadily, and she's also an adult and not a starlet. Plus, she has a French last name, hello.

Who do you want to play Chanel?

I heard good ol' Demi Moore was up for the role, but i doubt she's ladylike enough:

please let ONE of these casts include SOME native English speakers so there's a prayer of US distribution – heard Friedkin couldn't get US funding so they're both French films now...

in the past, Daniele has cast enough recognizable faces to pepper her posters for US audiences, but never the lead

the alternative? guess there's always hope for a US remake...

Sorry Stac, but if you ever pull something like that again on my comments board, you're getting deleted - it's a cute site, but that's an advertisement and a half!

I think Audrey might be able to pull it off if she was 10 years older.

Not that I don't adore her, but you are just saying Miss Tatou because she's french. I think Cate Blanchett for sure.

how does having a last French name called hello help her give her the role of Coco Chanel?

i agree casey. i love audrey tatou, but i don't think she's old enough, ruthless, or raw whatsoever.
but i think cate blanchett is too elegant, although i do love her. i'm going for angelina. . . she could definitely pull it off. she's got that racy but refined thing going for her.

Agnes, are you talking about Angelina? Her "last" name (which is her middle name, according to her birth certificate) means "pretty" in French. The reason she has a French middle name? She also has a French mother.

I second Angelina for an American movie, but I'm excited for the French movie already in the works!
