Behind the Seams: Kate Moss for TopShop for Barneys

As you've been reminded, the Kate Moss for TopShop collection hit Barneys New York this morning. Accordingly, our intrepid fashion novice, Bess Levin, made an early morning stop at the store to see about the fuss...

Though I’m not a fan of getting out of bed in the morning, when there’s a promise of the Kate Moss for Top Shop (for Barneys), I can be known to make sacrifices. The early rising thing was also helped by the fact that my apartment much closer to the flagship store than the office, which has always been more of a curse—“look at it, there it is, just stop by, you have time—but today served me well.

I arrived around quarter to ten, thinking I’d be one of the first few people online, but I’d underestimated Ms. Moss’s star power in America (and several coordinates above Houston and Lafayette). While I waited for the doors to open with 90 of my newest friends, I noticed the window displays: Each had a model in an outfit from the line, wearing Kate Moss masks. Cool or creepy?

Inside—on 7, for those of you making the trip today— Kate’s picture was plastered all over the walls.

There was a dash for dresses—the black one in particular, because it’s the best made—and the gold studded tee (literally, every girl had one in her hand). I’d considered the basic tank, but couldn’t justify it at $55. Hello, Forever 21. The black vests were grabbed immediately; a huge hit. But the big question of the day was the floral dress—cute or wrong?

One girl said she was underwhelmed by the offering, but "I saw the line in English Bazaar," she said. "They made it look so good!"

When I left at 11, there were tons of girls and the pile was dwindling. Several staffers told me the morning was a definite success, and we agree.

But what about the other Barney's? Could you get the line in Chelsea, in Florida, in Los Angeles? Let us know!

Barneys' shopper Sarah shows off the black-strapped dress.

Sarah looks much better in this dress than the mannequin with no eyes. This is encouraging to shoppers who worried about what real women would look like.

The flower dress inspires confusion, controversy, multiple visits to the dressing room.

Flashbacks to the Barneys Warehouse Sale... oh, the adventure of it all!

i went to the barney's co op in DC today and had the same 'hello, forever 21' reaction to most of the stuff - especially the tees and tanks. granted, the only dress they had (at least on the floor) was the flowered one, but all i had to do was feel the fabric to know that i couldn't justify the $120.
that black dress looks amazing on her though...

I was also at the georgetown coop in DC and ended up getting the flowery dress and the gray sequined tank. I waited outside when the store opened with about 5 other girls, shows how different DC is than NY.

the sandals are sooo comfortable and the belt has good heft to cover my substantial gut

At Barneys Coop in Austin, Tx the only people there for Kate Moss were myself and the friend I brought with me. We got there 5 minutes after it opened and felt stupid for worrying about LINES. It was completely dead it the store. There was one rack of Kate Moss clothes in the middle of the store, and the cutest thing on it was the floral dress (which I bought, and love). Most of it was very blah, especially the tank tops and the pants.

my friend is studying abroad in italy and woke up at 6am to go online to buy stuff from barneys website which started selling items at 6am. she said the website was shutdown for an hour due the overwhelming number of visitors and she managed to order 2 dresses in her size before they sold out in a couple of hours.

well, i don't know about the Barneys in Beverly Hills but the Barneys COOP in losangeles just had a sprinkle of people... no lines... no chaos... I really thought we had more fashion conscious people... but i guess not...

suprisingly there were more "Free Paris H." protestors, that caught media attention, than katemoss shoppers :)aahahha

p.s. i loved the floral print dress, but for $120... with that material.... so not worth it.... they practically doubled the original price! instead i opted for the black skinnys =) and when are the corset t-shirts coming in... goodness~

Holly,
To be fair, the floral print dress was originally 45 pounds, which is about 90$. When you include shipping and handling to the US from the UK, 120$ seems a little more fair (not taking into consideration the construction of the garment itself)

I received my shirt from TopShop a couple of days ago and I am not impressed. The material is very thin and feels cheap- and now I feel foolish for getting caught up in the hype. Most of those items can be bought at Forever 21 for a fraction of the price!

i was at barneys in beverly hills a few minutes after it opened at 10 AM. there were no lines at all and only less than 50 shoppers when I left at 10:30 AM.

btw, not everyone knows that opening ceremony carries kate moss for topshop stuff too. i went there after barneys and there were less than 10 people in line. and they had a few more items than what barneys carries but at premium prices. $150 for the pansy dress? it's not worth more than $40 if it didn't have kate moss' name on it, IMHO.

i got the pansy dress though. go figure.

After seeing the collection online, there was no way I was going to drag myself out of bed to head over to Georgetown.

I didn't think anything was flattering, just because looks good on Kate Moss(or is her line) doesn't mean that its good for everyone else.

THE KATE MOSS COLLECTION IS MUCH LIKE THE WOMAN HERSELF, NOT VERY WELL MADE, CHEAP AND TACKY. OH, AND WONT BE LONG BEFORE BOTH SHE AND THE COLLECTION FALL APART.
