Plastics Make Perfect?

The BBC reports that Anya Hindmarch's non-plastic bags hit shelves today, and the backlash has begun. Of particular interest is this comment left by a BBC viewer:

"It has already been noted on one gossip website that the PR company promoting the Anya Hindmarsh bags sent out 100s of promotional copies to editors inside large silver jiffy bags which surely count as "plastic". I suspect these were also posted despite being sent largely within central London. There's a disturbing lack of congruence with the message and their actions. This bag does send a message to the consumer: do as we say, don't do as we do."

Meanwhile, reports from London say 20,000 of the bags sold out in an hour.

Do you still want one?

Yeah, I pretty much do still want one. And have pre-ordered from Anya Hindmarch. You have to remember that these bags were a collaboration between Sainsburys and Whole Foods, Anya Hindmarch and WeAreWhatWeDo.org. Anya Hindmarch is a luxury bag designer, we can't blame her for packaging the bags incorrectly. I just received a handwritten thank you for my pre-order.... pretty nice for a $15 dollar purchase.

It's about what you do with the bag and the statement you make after you own it. The point of the bag is to take it every time you go grocery shopping, not just use it as your summer beach tote. Whether it becomes a fad or not will hinge on how Americans use them.

Not really. They're cute, but there are so many other cute totes out there. I just think people will get tired of seeing them everywhere after a few months.

I've used canvas totes for shopping for years now, but they were always like, free giveaways for supporting channel thirteen or something. Hopefully these will catch on as a fashionable trend and lead to more bags being made that are even more stylish. At the same price though!

Yes! I pre-ordered 2 totes from the Anya Hindmarch store in LA and am looking forward to using them and having them spark conversation and perhaps make people think twice about getting their purchases bagged in plastic. I live in San Francisco which just passed an ordinance banning plastic bags in grocery store chains and I hope other cities in the US follow suit.

I got one yesterday and it came in a plastic bag which i thought was quite ironic. Really nice bag though, much nicer than I had expected. Fustrating because over half the people who brought it have no idea what it's for or who it's by.

The bag is adorable, and despite the fact that widespread trends do not appeal to me, I'll still buy one- I've been looking for a canvas bag to use instead of plastic for a while....

These bags are without a doubt cute. And I think it is a bit ironic that they are shipped within a plastic bag. But at the same time having a bag like this could lead to something much bigger; like a discussion of the environment.

Any way that we can get the message across that there's a problem here, I think is a good thing. :)

RE deborah: Wow, I really do hope other cities follow SF.
