Fairy Tale Weddings Turn Literal

arielm copy.jpg
Today Disney announced a new initiative: princess bride dresses. Inspired by the Disney heroines who inevitably marry (all of them except Pocahontas, I think…), the gowns are for grown-up women approaching their wedding day. Designer Kirstie Kelly shared her sketches for the line with the Wall Street Journal, and here’s where it gets interesting:

“As Ms. Kelly sees it, Cinderella is “classic glamour” — the dresses in her line come in high-shine satin with ball-gown skirts and make generous use of silver embroidery and crystals. Snow White has a slightly more conservative look dubbed “sweet elegance.” Ariel and Jasmine models are considerably racier. Ariel, who played the title role in “The Little Mermaid,” has a “sultry allure” and is “comfortable showing her body.” Jasmine, from “Aladdin,” is “bohemian chic,” and her various dresses are big on sheath and lace.”

Isn’t it funny that now, we’re given permission to see Ariel and Jasmine as sexy? Cinderella too - Annie Leibowitz recently shot her, in the form of Scarlett Johansson, for an upcoming Disney campaign…

I'm not a big fan of Disney movies and would never consider a Disney wedding but, with that said, I think the dress would be beautiful for someone who DID want that. Obviously these aren't designs for everyone but to say that someone who would like it must be immature or doesn't want to look elegant was kind of off base. I think a mature person could pull this off and look very elegant in doing so. The wedding day is so much about the Bride and if this is what makes her feel good that day then so be it!!!!

I think that maybe a lot of women want to look and feel like a princess no matter what age. I am now 42 and still want to feel like a princess. I would want my Husband to treat me like that. Why not? It's nice. You may not always end up with a Happily Ever After with a Prince Charming. I don't think he is really out there but...a girl at least deserves the perfect dress and wedding. When my daughter gets married in the next year or two I would love to get her one of those dresses. She is all for it. If you want a happily ever after... why not? It may not be every girls dream to be a princess as I read from some...maybe they couldn't pull it off. Ha, but...I'll leave it at that. I love the dress and good luck with the idea.

The actual dresses aren't going to look like the ones being marketed now for little girls with bright colors and polyester. The sketches for them actually look very nice ... they're only INSPIRED by the characters of Disney, not modeled exactly after what you see in the movies. People need to calm down ... nobody's making YOU wear one on your wedding day, I think it's great that the people who do opt to wear a Disney Princess edition ELEGANT wedding gown can now do so.

What a racket. Now Disney wants to take over the multi-billion dollar bridal business. I think part of the problem is that too many young girls are raised on Disney and buy into that whole princess thing. You hear these girls calling themselves princesses and demanding all sorts of things that they think they deserve and can't really afford. I think that looking your best for your wedding day is what every bride wants. Buying a Disney princess dress is buying into the whole "I am a princess" thing and focusing on the wedding only, and not what comes after, which is often times less that a happily ever after.

What the hell is wrong with you people? If you've got to play DRESSUP on your wedding day, then maybe you should postpone the marriage until you're more mature.

And, where, exactly, do you people think the money comes from to pay for your Princess wedding? Most of us women have to WORK for a living, and starting a marriage off by being in 20 or $30,000 worth of debt is not worth the ONE day you get to pretend you're something from a child's storybook. And if you think your future husband isn't going to resent all the time and money you waste on living some fantasy, guess again. And DON'T say he hasn't got any say in the matter, because if you start your marriage by ignoring his feelings, you'll be seeing a divorce lawyer within 5 years.

The word is spelled G-I-M-M-I-C-K. Yet another useless idea that will get silly people to part with their money big time.

The bell's ringing, so go ahead and salivate already.

PS to Brenda......

It is funny, considering that modern wedding gowns are not white to symbolize virginity.

The traditional color for wedding dresses in Asia is red. In Europe, until the early 19th century, a woman simply wore her best dress to get married in. This traditon was also true for North America. The tradition of wearing white gowns started in the Victorian era. White garments were very expensive to keep clean, so a bride wearing a white gown was telling the whole world how wealthy she was. Of couse, when high society starts a tradition, common folk have to copy it to prove their social positon, too. By the beginning of the 20th century, almost all European and American brides wore white.

I'm not sure how the virginal thing got tagged to this tradition, if anyone out there knows, feel free to enlighten me.

I think the downfall of most marriages can be found in the comments of many of the women here. Life is not a fairy tale, and there are few, if any, Prince Charmings. There ARE a bunch of great men out there, but can they actually achieve the perfection for which so many women strive? Probably not. Wishing for the fairy tale is a recipe for disappontment.

Also, I think that the "show" that weddings have become are insane. I've so many friends that are getting married in the next few months to a year, and to hear them talk about the planning is discouraging, at best. Rarely do I ever hear them exclaim how lucky they are to be marrying the women or men they've chosen, but I can tell you exactly what color scheme they've chosen or the style of limo that'll be taking them to the elaborate affair.

Perhaps more marriages would last if we made them affairs of the heart, and did away with the nonsense surrounding them, these dresses included.

When I get married again, it'll be a much quieter affair with the people who matter to me most. (Yes, I did the show once and was caught up in the same spectacle as everyone else- if only we had considered each other a little more closely...)

I find the idea of wearing a Disney Princess inspired gown not my cup of tea, but still very nice.

It's funny yet almost sad how many people seem so against it. Hello people, It's just a dress!! It isn't defacing the idea of marriage!

If some lady wants to wear a gown like that instead of the traditional white dress I say that's a fab idea. It's creative and brings a light hearted aspect into the ceremony.

Perhaps the old hags posting things like, "if you want to play DRESSUP on your wedding day, then maybe you should postpone the marriage until you're more mature" are just too depressed with their own lives and can't have a little fun once in a while.

It's just a dress. Really now.

Besides... isn't the point of buying a beautiful gown on for your wedding day to DRESS UP nicely and feel like a princess? :-P

Debbie- It was well know that Walt Disney was a money hungry bastard! If you don't know that do some reading! I live in Florida today and work as an educator in the lower grades. The Diseney Company has made practices of suing area schools for showing thier films. If they had a brain in their heads they would realize something... if it a movie kids like, they will go home and ask their parents to BUY it for them!

And another thing... The workers at Disney are underpaid and have hardly any healthcare. The cosstumes they wear are uncleanly and some of them have sperad fungal diseases and things of that nature. They work in incredible heat to make sure you and your children have a "Magical" experience and then they go sleep in their cars, because they cant afford a house. If you don't believe me, I believe it was on an episode of 60 minutes.

And puh-lease to all you people bitching about it. And now, I can do it in my Disney dress!!

And, before you judge, I have a full time job, my own apartment, and I work very very hard for everything I have. I'm saving for my wedding, so i WON'T be in debt.

So stop being so cynical. Just because I and my husband-to-be think I should dress beautifully and look like a princess on our day, does not mean we are irresponsible children. You can't ruin my dreams, my wedding will be beautiful and classy and perfect, I'm paying for it myself, I'm an adult and I take care of myself.

Don't JUDGE people just because they want pretty things!!!!

I went to the site mentioned..and don't see what the big deal is...unless i missed something THOSE dresses are nothing special. The dress I got married in tottally gave me the sensation of being a genuine princess. I payed for my wedding completely....and did the whole damn thing for under two grand.

But then...my wedding sucked a--!! :((

No one but our parents and my grandparents attended...save the wedding planner...that worthless piece of----

I've always dreamed of having a perfect fairy tale wedding...my invitations actually looked like my husband and I on our wedding day...he was especially handsome :) But he always objects when i refer to him as my prince charming.
Anyway...just ranting, i suppose.

If THOSE dresses are really your be all-end all....more power to you.

I think for everyone trash talking this especially the african american comment and the one about marriage not being a fairy tale please give me a break...if you want to wear the dress then you would wear it and if not than don't. Personally I LOVE Disney. I was engaged in the castle and if I could have this dress for my wedding I would. You can make your wedding day and for that matter you can make the rest of your life the way you dream all it takes is a little effort. So with all of that said I think this is a great idea for someone such as myself who has always dreamed of being a Disney Princess for a day!

geez, what's the big deal? everyone's getting all fired up over some dresses. who really cares one way or the other? if you want one, wear it. if you don't, then don't. no need to put each other down over it, it's just a dress. if you're really getting as irritated as some of you seem to be, you have a bigger problem than disney wedding dresses.

Folks, those links to DisneyDresses.com and DisneyWeddingDresses.com are not real links to actual products but domains registered to someone who wants to sell the domain. E.g., squatters. All products and links shown are actually in the public domain already and are more than likely totally unrelated to Disney products and the actual gowns.

I'm sure the actual dresses will be linked off the official Disney web site and will be announced with great fanfare.

Of course, what this means to all of you looking at these dresses and loving them is that they're out there somewhere to be purchased TODAY so you don't have to wait on Disney!

Who are all these women who want to look like princesses on their wedding day?

I've always wanted to look like Carolyn Bessette Kennedy at my wedding.

Didn't know there were so many little-girl readers posting from flyover states on this site.

WOW YALL ARE CRAZY. Looks like people need to find better things to do than bash other people for wanting to look like a beautiful princess on her wedding day. I am getting married in April and if i hadnt already purchased my dress i would have totaly given these a look. They are very elegant and beautiful. I especialy like the mermaid style for Arial. I hope they take off like rockets. Disney rocks
