DIY: Barneys Scrimshaw Bangles

bangles.jpg
Total comments, emails, MySpace messages, and texts you sent about the Jessica Cushman bangles, sold at Barneys for $800 and simply incredible: 71.

Total minutes it took to make our own (admittedly juvenile, and merely inspired) version: 4.

Here goes…

You’ll need: Plastic bangle bracelets in a solid color (we found ours at Forever 21).
Two Sharpie paint pens, oil-based. One should be medium tipped and one should be fine tipped.
Clear nail polish.
A soft pencil.

Step one: Choose the song lyric/ movie quote/ designer initials you want on the bangle. With your pencil, lightly write the lyric onto the bracelet for spacing. Adjust until the whole quote fits perfectly.

Step two: Shake your Sharpie pens until the paint is free flowing. Write your script around the bangle, being careful not to smudge.

Step three: Wait five minutes for the paint to dry. Coat the script in clear nail polish to protect it from chipping.

Step four: Impress Gwyneth with the Coldplay lyric you’re wearing at Beatrice; avoid subway boredom by reading your own wrists; trendset as usual.

Fashionista is closed for Presidents Day. We celebrate by dressing like Jackie O. The site will be back tomorrow.

Our bracelets cost $3.50 - $6.50 at Forever 21.

Their Sharpie paint took far less time than we thought - about 20 seconds - to dry.

From top to bottom:

“It’s All Happening,” from Almost Famous

“I spent all day making love in the Chelsea Hotel,” from Chelsea Hotel by Dan Bern

“On Wednesdays, We Wear Pink,” from Mean Girls (superscript: “but this was girl world, and in girl world, you had to be sneaky”).

“We Can Live Our Misbehavior,” from Rebellion by Arcade Fire.

You're crazy. I think this is great and I would wear those bracelets anywhere! I like the white better than the pink though.

For those with bad handwriting - rub-on transfer letters work too. and the coat of clear nail polish is a must!

I'd love to see someone scrawl that famous line from Kurt Cobain's 'All Apologies'. You know, that "everyone is gay" line.

actually, it occurs to me that the oversized bangles sold by most Guys With Tables Of Accessories all over Spring & B'way have plenty of wooden bangles that could be used with transfer lettering for a more...I hesitate to say non-adolescent, but whatever, that's the word, result.

ok you know what? the ones you made are pretty juvenile but they are certainly inspired. i'm going to give it a go with some more gothic lettering and send you pics.

Confession: I saw stencils and rub on letters in the craft store. I wanted to see what I could do with just a Sharpie and some plastic.

They do look awfully teenage, but you get the idea. I'm dying to see your photos once you've made the bracelets, which I'm sure will look incredible.

Also, to "reverse trajectory" - I still write for NY Mag, almost every week. But if you make me a bangle that says "silly, silly girl" I will wear it proudly.

faran, can I ask which craft store? I've been hunting for feathers and a glue gun for well over a week, and manhattan is resisting my advances.

This is so lame- to rip off someone who has actually mastered a craft with Sharpie??? Lame.

Question: In "Step Four" you direct your readers to "trendset as usual"--what trend is anyone setting by hideously knocking off someone else's carefully crafted works of art? As someone who owns one of the bracelets from Barneys, I have to believe from this whole sad project that you do not. The name of your website is a misnomer and your motto,"style like you mean it", a sham.

Relax people. No one is going to mistake these for the ones you bought at Barney's... But not everyone can afford $130 for a frivolous (but very fun) accessory. I think the DIY ones are sweet.

RE: Dan Bern

Actually, you're right and the lyrics are written wrong online.

I'm a jackass.

But I really like your ideas and DB love anyway :o)
